The Beagle is a member of the Hound Group and was first recognized
by the AKC in 1885. They were originally bred as scent hounds.
They hunted using their noses more than their eyes. Beagles
have a very strong sense of smell.
Because Beagles lived in packs for hundreds of years, they
just naturally like being with people and other animals. They
are gentle, happy companions, as loving as they are lovable.
They are most of all curious and need plenty of active exercise.
No Beagle should be allowed to roam free, as its nose will
surely get it into trouble.
Beagles make good hunters, and enjoy the sport of tracking
and can be good therapy dogs. They make very faithful companions.
Beagles come in two sizes. Beagles are 10-13 inches tall
and weigh 18-20 pounds or can be 13-15 inches tall and weigh
20-30 pounds. Beagles will shed, but since their coat is short,
it requires minimal grooming . A regular brushing and bath
will help control the shedding process. They should be brushed
at least once every week, but it wouldn't hurt to brush more.
