So
you've decided to get a dog? Congratulations! Your next
step is to select a breed. With over 140 breeds to choose
from, this won't be easy. Sometimes it helps to narrow
your search down a bit. Consider the following when
selecting a breed.
Your preferences. Naturally, you're not going to select
a breed that doesn't appeal to you. You might not like
large dogs, for example, so you can eliminate many of
the working dogs from your list.
Your
lifestyle. Do you have time to brush or comb a dog almost
every day? If not, you can eliminate some of the longhaired
breeds. If you're very busy, consider a shorthaired
breed that requires little grooming.
Your
household. If you live with young children or plan to
have children one day, consider one of the more patient
breeds. If you get a lot of company, select a breed
that's friendly with strangers.
Your
experience. Some breeds are really independent and hard
to handle unless you have a great deal of experience
training dogs.
Your
yard. Unless you live in the country or have a large
yard, eliminate many of the large breeds.
Your
other Pets. If you live with cats or other dogs, select
a breed that gets along well with
other Pets.
